DHL Freighter Damaged After Drone Bomb Discovery Forces Leipzig Diversion
A cargo aircraft sustained minor damage following an emergency diversion from Leipzig Halle Airport, where tour group members discovered a drone carrying an explosive device near parked Ukrainian transport planes.
A DHL cargo plane incurred damage to its forward section after being forced to divert from Germany's Leipzig Halle Airport on August 4, following the discovery of an explosive-equipped drone near the runway. The aircraft redirected to Hannover Airport, where inspectors documented the damage. German authorities are now examining whether the freighter collided with a second unmanned aircraft, and whether the incidents are connected.
The sequence of events unfolded just before midnight when participants on a nighttime bus tour passing through the airport's secure cargo zone spotted a quadcopter hovering near four parked Antonov AN-124 heavy-lift transport aircraft. According to DIE ZEIT, the tour guide approached the hovering drone and forced it to the ground around 11:40 PM. An improvised explosive or incendiary device, described as roughly the size of a tin can, was subsequently discovered attached to the aircraft.
The targeted Antonov freighters belong to Ukraine's Antonov Airlines and have operated from Leipzig since Ukrainian airspace closed following Russia's 2022 invasion. These aircraft conduct outsized cargo missions for commercial, humanitarian and military purposes, including assignments for NATO member states through the Leipzig-based SALIS strategic-airlift program.
Airport authorities immediately activated established drone-response protocols and summoned police and explosives specialists to the scene. Investigative reporting by NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung indicated that testing revealed traces of PETN and Semtex—both powerful high explosives—on the device. The detonator had reportedly become separated or torn away, which may explain why the device failed to detonate.
Operations at Leipzig Halle Airport were suspended while a bomb-disposal robot examined the area. The southern runway closed, and incoming aircraft received instructions to hold, divert or abort their approaches. A total of 19 cargo aircraft and one passenger flight were affected by the disruption, according to Reuters.
German officials have not disclosed whether they believe the drone targeted the Ukrainian aircraft specifically or if the DHL freighter's collision with an unidentified object is related to the explosive discovery. Both incidents remain under active investigation.
