Boeing's New Air Force One Delivery Pushed to 2028, Four Years Late

The two Boeing 747-8 aircraft being converted into next-generation presidential transports for the US Air Force have encountered years of delays, with delivery now expected no earlier than mid-2028 for the first jet and mid-2029 for the second, according to recent program updates.

Boeing secured the contract in 2018 to transform a pair of 747-8 Intercontinental airframes into VC-25B aircraft, replacements for the current aging VC-25As that have served presidential administrations since 1990. The manufacturer initially projected completion by late 2024, but that timeline has stretched by roughly three and a half years as the complexity of the modification work became apparent.

The two widebodies at the center of the program carry an unusual backstory. Both were originally manufactured for Russian carrier Transaero but went undelivered following the airline's financial collapse. The Air Force later acquired the orphaned airframes, handing Boeing the task of converting commercial passenger jets into highly specialized command aircraft.

That conversion involves far more than a standard cabin reconfiguration. The VC-25B program requires installation of secure presidential mission communications systems, defensive countermeasures, a dedicated medical facility, executive interior spaces, and structural modifications to support classified equipment. Reports indicate the work includes thousands of wiring changes and requirements that differ dramatically from typical passenger aircraft standards.

While the permanent VC-25Bs remain under construction, an interim solution has already entered service. A former Qatari Airways 747-8, designated as a "Bridge" aircraft, transported President Donald Trump for the first time on July 1, 2026, providing temporary presidential airlift capability until the purpose-built jets are ready.

The lengthy modification timeline underscores the engineering challenges inherent in building what amounts to a flying command center. Though Boeing's commercial 747 production line shuttered after delivering the final freighter variant, these two presidential aircraft represent some of the most technically demanding examples of the type ever attempted—and their completion remains years away.
