Aeroflot Passengers Breach Moscow Airport Security, Chase Moving Aircraft

Two passengers who arrived late for an Aeroflot departure at Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport breached security barriers and ran onto the airport ramp in an unsuccessful attempt to board their flight, according to a report. Video footage shows the women, one pulling wheeled luggage, heading toward their aircraft as ground crews moved it away from the gate on July 25.

The towing operation halted when the passengers reached the aircraft, and ground staff along with police escorted the women from the restricted area. The aircraft door had already closed and the plane was being repositioned, making boarding logistically impossible without returning to the jetbridge or deploying mobile air stairs.

Russian transportation security statutes reportedly allow fines up to 5,000 rubles—approximately $60—for negligent violations of secure areas. Intentional breaches can draw penalties reaching roughly $360. The incident mirrors a May occurrence in Tyumen, where a passenger who missed boarding while using a restroom facility ran onto the apron in an attempt to stop a Norilsk-bound flight, ultimately receiving a 3,000-ruble fine as the aircraft departed without him.

The breach highlights ongoing challenges airports face in preventing unauthorized ramp access. Similar incidents have occurred at other airports, including passengers who climbed down a jetbridge onto a pushback tug at an AnadoluJet flight, others who pursued a Wizz Air aircraft after pushback, and a traveler at Denver International Airport who forced open an emergency exit to reach a United Airlines tug.

How the Moscow passengers gained access to the secured ramp area remains unclear, though they successfully passed through at least one controlled door to reach the active aircraft movement zone. Neither Aeroflot nor Sheremetyevo airport authorities have publicly addressed potential security protocol reviews following the incident.
