The French House
Dean Street pub that only serves half-pints (except on April 1st). De Gaulle drank here in WWII. No mobile phones, no TV — a rare survivor of pre-Instagram London.
London's gnarliest square mile — nightlife, theatre, LGBTQ+ village, and still-shabby charm
Soho compresses more London into less space than any other neighbourhood. A square kilometre bounded by Oxford Street, Regent Street, Leicester Square, and Charing Cross Road contains: London's theatre district, Chinatown, the historic gay village on Old Compton Street, the remnants of the 1960s music industry on Denmark Street, dozens of members-only clubs, the BBC's old studios, and more restaurants per block than anywhere else in the city. It's also where London's sex industry has been concentrated since the 1950s, now mostly pushed to a few Walker's Court-adjacent blocks but still visible after dark. Stay here for maximum walking access to everything touristy (10 minutes to Trafalgar Square, 15 to Covent Garden, 20 to the South Bank) — but expect constant noise.

Open 22 hours, closed for 2 in the early morning. Frith Street café since 1949, espresso machine original, footballs dangling from the ceiling since Italy's 2006 World Cup win.
London's legendary jazz club on Frith Street — three sets a night, cover £30-60 depending on the act. Book two weeks ahead for weekend slots.
Gerrard Street is the main strip; 50+ restaurants. Plum Valley for dim sum, Four Seasons for roast duck, Bun House for Chinese buns. Avoid the laminated English-only menus.
Private members' club (Soho House group) in a Georgian townhouse, ground-floor restaurant open to the public. Book for Sunday brunch; Champagne list is extensive.
The Soho Hotel (Richmond Mews) is the design-led 5-star pick, £420-680/nt, the bar is one of London's best pre-theatre spots. Ham Yard Hotel is quieter, same price bracket. For mid-range, Dean Street Townhouse (Soho House group, public booking) runs £280-360. Budget: Z Hotel Soho on Moor Street is £130-180 for tiny but well-designed windowless rooms.
Tottenham Court Road (Elizabeth, Central, Northern lines), Oxford Circus (Central, Victoria, Bakerloo), Piccadilly Circus (Piccadilly, Bakerloo), and Leicester Square (Piccadilly, Northern) all touch the edges of Soho — you're never more than 5 minutes from an Underground station. Within Soho, walking is the only option; cars don't fit and most of it is pedestrianised evenings.
For first-time visitors wanting maximum walking access to the sights + nightlife, yes. For quiet mornings or light sleepers, no. Pick a hotel on a side street (Dean, Frith, Greek) rather than on the main arteries.
