Deira & Al Fahidi (Old Dubai)

Dubai's pre-modern heart — the wind-tower souks, the Creek abras, and the spice and gold markets that predate the skyline

— The Neighbourhood

Before the 1990s Burj-Khalifa-era Dubai, there was the Creek — the saltwater inlet that made the city a trading port since at least the 1830s. Deira (north bank) and Bur Dubai / Al Fahidi (south bank) are what remain: wind-tower houses restored to their 19th-century form, the Gold Souk (300+ jewellers in a covered market), the Spice Souk (smaller but more atmospheric), and the abra water taxis that cross the Creek for AED 1 (~$0.27). It's dense, not air-conditioned, and not on most tourists' first-day itinerary — which is why returning visitors come here first. Stay here if you want the non-skyline Dubai with the oldest hotels and the real Indian/Persian/Yemeni restaurants.

Where to eat, drink, and explore

sight

Al Fahidi Historic Neighbourhood

Restored wind-tower (barjeel) houses from the 1890s, preserved as a heritage district. Houses now contain the Dubai Museum, Coffee Museum, and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Free to walk.

shop

Gold Souk

300+ jewellers under a shaded covered market. Prices are by weight + making charge — always bargain. Evening (18:00-22:00) is when the souk is at its most active.

sight

Creek abra crossing

AED 1 (less than $0.30) gets you across Dubai Creek on a wooden water taxi — the cheapest cultural experience in the city. Both Bur Dubai Abra Station and Deira Old Souk Station run continuously.

shop

Spice Souk

Smaller than the Gold Souk but more photogenic — saffron, sumac, frankincense resins, dried limes. Deira side. Vendors will brew you a cup of cardamom coffee while you decide.

cafe

Bastakiya cafés

The wind-tower courtyards of Al Fahidi house the best café culture in Old Dubai — Arabian Tea House (covered courtyard, Middle Eastern breakfast spread), and XVA Café (vegetarian, attached to a contemporary-art gallery).

sight

Dubai Frame

150m-tall rectangular frame (opened 2018) designed to frame 'Old Dubai' from one side and 'New Dubai' from the other. AED 50 entry. Touristy but genuinely functional as a viewpoint.

— Where to stay

Sleeping in Deira & Al Fahidi (Old Dubai)

Al Seef Heritage Hotel Dubai (restored 19th-century houses, the most atmospheric base in the city) and the XVA Art Hotel (eight suites inside a wind-tower house) are the two boutique picks. Hotel Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights is the big mid-tier option. Budget travellers: the many small Deira hotels around the Gold Souk run from $55/night.

— Getting around

How to move

Metro Green Line serves both sides (Al Fahidi station and Al Ghubaiba). Abras cross the Creek for AED 1. Walking within Al Fahidi is easy; Deira is more spread out. Avoid driving — Deira's narrow streets and parking situation are defeating.

FAQ

Deira & Al Fahidi (Old Dubai): common questions

A half-day minimum if you only have 3 days in Dubai — the Gold Souk + Al Fahidi courtyard + one abra crossing is the highlight compression. For anyone staying 5+ nights, spending two full days here is deeply rewarding.
