Fall Foliage Travel

Where to see autumn colour in 2026 — with peak-colour timing, driving routes, and the destinations beyond the New England default.

Fall foliage travel is precisely timed — the bloom window is 10-14 days in any given region, and peak colour shifts 5-10 days year-to-year based on summer precipitation and first-frost timing. State tourism offices in New England publish week-by-week colour maps, as do Japan's meteorological agencies for momiji (autumn leaves). Beyond the New England and Japan defaults, Quebec, the Alps, and Korea all deliver extraordinary fall travel. These are the six destinations we send friends to with timing and logistics.

Editor picks

#1

Vermont + New Hampshire

Best window: Late September (north) through mid October (south)

The canonical autumn trip. Vermont's peak moves south: the Northeast Kingdom peaks late September, the central Green Mountains first week of October, the Bennington/Brattleboro south second week. The Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire (34 miles) is the postcard drive. Stay at Twin Farms in Barnard or the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. Book 6+ months ahead; New England hotels go to 90%+ occupancy the entire month of October.

#2

Kyoto · Japan

Best window: Mid to late November (peak typically November 20-25)

Kyoto's momiji season is roughly as spectacular as its sakura season, with crowds that are denser (foreign tourists return) but hotel rates slightly cheaper. The temples are the draws — Eikan-do (its illuminated evening viewings are transcendent), Tofuku-ji (the Tsutenkyo Bridge), Jingo-ji temple in the western mountains. Weekdays much less crowded than weekends. Book hotels 4-6 months ahead.

#3

Quebec · Charlevoix and the Laurentians

Best window: Late September through mid October

Quebec's autumn is as spectacular as Vermont's but 30-40% cheaper on hotels, restaurants, and tours. Charlevoix (2 hours north of Quebec City) has whale-watching (beluga, fin, minke) concurrent with peak colour. The Laurentians (Mont-Tremblant area) are the driving circuit. Quebec City itself with its 17th-century walled core is its own draw. French-language hospitality makes it feel distinct from a New England trip.

#4

South Korea · Seoraksan and Naejangsan

Best window: Mid October through mid November

Seoraksan National Park in the northeast (near the DMZ) peaks mid-October — red and yellow pop against granite. Naejangsan National Park in Jeolla-do (south) peaks late October/early November. Both are less internationally-touristed than Japan; day trips from Seoul possible but staying at a park-adjacent pension gives early-morning access. Combine with a Seoul city-break.

#5

Dolomites · northern Italy

Best window: Late September through mid October

The Dolomites in fall: larch trees turn gold, the jagged limestone peaks remain visible (pre-snow), and the hiking infrastructure is fully operational (before November closures). Alta Badia, Cortina d'Ampezzo, or Val Gardena as bases. Stay at Alpine lodges that cater to both Italian and Austrian-Italian guests. The Lago di Braies lake is photographed constantly; go early morning or skip for the lesser-known alternatives.

#6

Scotland · the Cairngorms and Perthshire

Best window: Mid October through early November

Scotland's autumn is warmer than its reputation suggests (10-14°C) and produces genuinely dramatic scenery — golden larch forests, copper beech hedgerows, and the loch-side villages at their most photogenic. Pitlochry in Perthshire is the base for the Enchanted Forest sound-and-light installation (mid October). Whisky distillery visits are at their most atmospheric.

Practical notes

Timing precision

Peak colour shifts 5-10 days year-to-year based on summer rainfall and first-frost timing. State tourism offices in New England publish week-by-week colour maps; Japan's JNTO publishes momiji forecasts starting in September. Book a trip that spans a 10-day window around the forecast peak; 3-4 day trips are too brittle.

Crowds vs colour

Weekends during peak colour are painful on popular scenic drives (Kancamagus, Skyline Drive in Virginia). Weekdays are often 50-60% less crowded. Pre-dawn to 08:00 is both crowd-free and photographically optimal (morning dew on leaves, slanted light).

Hotel booking

New England, Japan, and Quebec during their respective peak windows all run 90%+ occupancy. Book 6+ months ahead for desirable properties. A last-minute Thursday arrival is often easier than Friday-Sunday — many travellers stick to weekend-only fall trips.

FAQ

Fall Foliage Travel: common questions

Peak is typically 3-5 days when 75%+ of leaves have turned colour but before significant leaf-drop. The window is 10-14 days of viable colour overall. State tourism agencies and Japan's JNTO publish updated peak-forecast maps weekly during September-November.
