What scams should I watch out for in Milan?
Pickpocketing is the dominant threat, concentrated around the Duomo, Stazione Centrale, and the 3 tram line that connects them. Work in pairs or threes: one person bumps or distracts while another lifts your wallet or phone. Wear a bag across your chest, keep your phone in a front pocket, and never put anything in a backpack you're wearing on your back in a crowd. The rose scam runs near the Duomo and Navigli: someone presses a flower into your hand or your partner's, then demands payment once you've accepted it. Drop it immediately and walk away. Fake petition gatherers, usually carrying clipboards, use the same sleight-of-hand as pickpockets while you're signing. Unofficial taxi drivers outside Centrale charge inflated flat rates to tourists who don't know better; use the white licensed cabs or Uber. Restaurant menus near major tourist sites sometimes list a "coperto" cover charge of 3-5 euros per person, which is legal, but confirm the menu price before sitting.
