Is it safe to walk in Frankfurt at night?
Frankfurt is generally safe to walk at night, with one clear exception: the Bahnhofsviertel, the neighborhood immediately around the central train station, where open drug use and street prostitution are concentrated and petty crime is more common after dark. Stick to Sachsenhausen, the Altstadt, Westend, or Bornheim in the evenings and you will have no issues — these areas have plenty of foot traffic, lit streets, and working restaurants and bars well past midnight. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn run reliably late into the night and all night on weekends, so getting around without walking through sketchy blocks is straightforward. Standard urban awareness applies: keep your phone out of sight on quiet stretches, don't leave bags unattended at outdoor seating. Frankfurt is a wealthy, well-policed city with lower violent crime rates than most comparable European financial centers, and locals walk home at 2 a.m. without much thought.
