Are there neighborhoods to avoid in Frankfurt?
Frankfurt is safer than its reputation suggests, but Bahnhofsviertel — the area immediately around the central station — warrants awareness, particularly after dark. It hosts a concentrated open-air drug scene along Taunusstrasse and the surrounding streets, and while violent crime against tourists is uncommon, petty theft and aggressive solicitation are not. That said, the same neighborhood also contains some of Frankfurt's best ramen shops, wine bars, and the city's red-light district, so avoiding it entirely means missing a genuinely interesting part of the city; just keep your bearings. Gutleutviertel, adjacent to the station, shares some of the same character. Elsewhere in the city, including Sachsenhausen, Bornheim, Nordend, and the Westend, you can move freely at any hour without meaningful concern. Frankfurt's overall crime rate is low by European capital standards, and the areas that draw caution are geographically compact and easy to navigate around if you prefer.
