How does tipping work in Dublin?
Tipping in Dublin is genuinely optional in a way that it isn't in the United States. In sit-down restaurants, 10–12% is standard if service was good; many bills already include a discretionary service charge, so check before adding more. In pubs, tipping for pints is not expected and will often be refused — the culture simply doesn't support it. If a bartender goes well beyond pouring your drinks, offering "one for yourself" (essentially buying them a drink) is the local gesture. For taxis, rounding up to the nearest euro or two is common and appreciated but not obligatory. Hotel porters and housekeeping follow roughly the same logic as the rest of Europe: a euro or two per bag or per night is courteous, not required. Card machines increasingly prompt for tips at cafés and takeaways; ignoring that prompt carries zero social consequence. Nobody in Dublin will treat you badly for not tipping.
