What's the best neighborhood to stay in Dublin?
Stay in the city center — specifically around St. Stephen's Green or Merrion Square — and you'll walk to nearly everything worth seeing without needing public transport. Grafton Street is two minutes away, Trinity College is five, and the Georgian architecture gives the streets actual character rather than the glass-and-concrete sameness of newer hotel districts. If you want something quieter with good restaurant access, Rathmines sits about 2km south: residential, mostly locals, and a short bus or bike ride in. Avoid the immediate vicinity of O'Connell Street north of the Liffey unless your hotel is exceptional, as the blocks directly around it have gotten significantly seedier post-pandemic. Portobello, along the Grand Canal, is increasingly popular for its independent cafes and proximity to both the Liberties and the city core. Budget matters: city-center hotels run €150-300 per night; Rathmines and Portobello Airbnbs typically come in €80-140.
