Is it safe to walk in Budapest at night?
Budapest is safe to walk at night by the standards of any major European capital. Violent crime against tourists is rare, and the city is well-lit in the central districts: the VII district (Erzsébetváros, the ruin bar quarter), the V district around Váci utca and the riverfront, and the I district on the Castle Hill side. The main irritant is petty theft in crowded areas, particularly around Deák Ferenc tér and on busy tram lines like the 4-6, where pickpockets work the late-night crowds. Keep your phone in a front pocket after midnight on weekends, when the party crowds thin out and opportunists follow. Avoid extended solo walks through the outer VIII and IX districts late at night if you don't know the area well, as they're quieter and less trafficked without being inherently dangerous. Taxi scams near nightlife zones are a greater practical risk than any physical threat, so use Bolt rather than hailing a cab on the street.
