What scams should I watch out for in Budapest?
The three that catch the most visitors: friendly women who approach solo men near Vörösmarty tér or Váci utca and suggest a specific bar — that bar will produce a bill of 50,000–150,000 HUF for two drinks, with large men near the exit. Decline any unsolicited bar recommendation from a stranger who seems unusually interested in your company. Second, unlicensed taxis still operate around Keleti station and the airport arrivals hall; use Bolt or the licensed FőTaxi (főtaxi.hu) only, and agree on a metered fare before you get in. Third, currency exchange booths on Váci utca advertise attractive rates on a large display but bury a crushing commission in the small print — use an ATM attached to a major bank (OTP, K&H) instead, and decline the offered dynamic currency conversion. Petty pickpocketing on the 4-6 tram and at the Great Market Hall is real but unremarkable by European standards; a zipped bag handles it.
