Cash or card in Budapest — what do locals actually use?
Locals use cards for almost everything now, and you can too. Contactless payment is accepted at the vast majority of restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and shops across the city, including on the BKK public transit network, where you can tap a Visa or Mastercard directly on the validators. That said, keep some forint on hand: street markets like Fény utca Piac, certain thermal bath entry desks, and smaller neighborhood vendors still prefer cash. ATMs are plentiful in central Pest, but skip the standalone machines in tourist corridors near Váci utca and at exchange kiosks advertising "0% commission" as both typically offer poor rates or add hidden fees. Use a bank-affiliated ATM, withdraw forints directly, and decline the option to pay in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion). A few thousand forints in your pocket covers the occasional cash-only scenario without weighing you down. The city is not hostile to cards, but it is not fully cashless either.
