What's the best neighborhood to stay in Barcelona?
The Eixample is the right base for most travelers. It sits at the center of the grid, puts you within walking distance of the Sagrada Família, Passeig de Gràcia, and the best restaurant concentration in the city, and has metro access in every direction. Accommodation runs from budget hostels on Carrer d'Aragó to genuinely good mid-range hotels along Gran Via. Gràcia, directly above Eixample, is worth considering if you want a calmer, more residential feel with strong local bars and restaurants around Plaça del Sol and Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia. Skip the Gothic Quarter as a base unless the price is exceptional; it is noisy until 3 a.m., the streets are disorienting, and the neighborhood caters almost entirely to tourists. Barceloneta is fine for a beach holiday but isolates you from the rest of the city more than the map suggests. Eixample gives you the fewest trade-offs.
