Travis AFB and Nellis AFB Lead Among USAF's Largest Installations

The United States Air Force operates its global fleet of warplanes with a workforce that remains smaller than the Army's ground forces, even as the service branch has reportedly surpassed its sister service in overall budget allocation. Congressional authorization now permits the USAF to maintain up to 321,500 active-duty personnel, marking a modest uptick from the previous year's ceiling. That core force is bolstered by more than 100,000 Air National Guard members, over 65,000 reservists, and hundreds of thousands of civilian employees.

Among the service's installations, Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, ranks as a major hub with more than 7,500 active-duty troops. Known as the Gateway to the Pacific, Travis serves as the Air Force's busiest logistics terminal, handling greater volumes of passengers and cargo than any other military air facility in the United States. The base is unique in hosting three distinct heavy-lift and aerial-refueling platforms at once, including the C-5M Super Galaxy—the largest aircraft in the USAF inventory—the C-17 Globemaster III, and the KC-46 Pegasus tanker. Travis recently took delivery of the Air Force's 100th KC-46, bringing the base's own fleet to twenty-two of the new refueling aircraft.

In addition to its 60th Air Mobility Wing, Travis is supported by more than 2,500 reservists assigned to the 349th Air Mobility Wing and over 2,500 civilian staff. The installation also operates the David Grant USAF Medical Center, the service's largest medical facility on the West Coast, and functions as the primary West Coast hub for aeromedical evacuation flights returning patients from the Pacific theater. The base's personnel and activities contribute approximately 4.5 million dollars to the local economy each year.

Meanwhile, Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas, Nevada, reportedly stations more than 11,500 active-duty personnel. The installation is recognized for hosting some of the world's largest simulated air-combat exercises on its expansive test-range complex, drawing squadrons from the Navy and allied forces for advanced air-combat training. Nellis's scale and operational tempo make it one of the busiest air-combat sites globally, underscoring the USAF's continued investment in realistic training environments.
