Southwest cuts 17 Atlanta routes, shifts to Nashville

Southwest Airlines has removed 17 routes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport over the past 18 months, according to Simple Flying, as the low-cost carrier shifts capacity to Nashville International Airport. The cutbacks mark a significant retreat from the Georgia hub, where the airline now occupies a distant third position behind hometown giant Delta and fellow budget operator Frontier Airlines.
Department of Transportation data shows Southwest carried 4.8 million passengers to and from Atlanta in 2025, down from more than 7.7 million the prior year. Load factors also weakened, falling from 75% in 2024 to 73.2% in 2025. The most recent discontinued service included flights to LaGuardia and Raleigh–Durham, Simple Flying reported.

Southwest remains third at Atlanta despite network shrinkage
Despite the route reductions, Southwest retains its third-place ranking at the airport in overall operations, ahead of American, United and JetBlue, according to Cirium. Delta dominates with 81.8 million passengers in 2025, while Frontier carried 5.2 million during the same period. Spirit, which has since ceased operations, handled 2.6 million passengers before its collapse.

Load factor pressure drives capacity reallocation
Southwest operates more than 800 Boeing 737s, the largest fleet of the type worldwide. Its biggest hub sits at Denver International Airport, where it commands over 40 gates and in excess of 170 daily departures. Atlanta, by contrast, has proven less profitable for the carrier, and load factors likely played a role in the decision to redeploy aircraft elsewhere, Simple Flying noted.
The airline's pivot to Nashville comes as carriers across the industry re-evaluate network economics in the face of shifting demand patterns. Southwest's Atlanta presence now reflects a more selective approach, concentrating on routes that can sustain higher load factors rather than maintaining a broad footprint at a hub where Delta's dominance leaves limited room for growth.
