Pemako Punakha Debuts Bhutan's First Luxury Tented Villas

A new luxury retreat featuring Bhutan's inaugural tented villas has opened in Punakha, offering guests private temperature-controlled pools and immersive cultural programming across a 60-acre riverside forest property.

Pemako Punakha serves as the flagship for Pemako Hotels, described as Bhutan's first domestically owned and operated luxury hospitality brand. The 21-villa property was conceptually designed by American landscape architect and interior designer Bill Bensley, whose recent Shinta Mani Mustang project in Nepal topped Robb Report's 2026 luxury hotel rankings.

The retreat occupies forested land along the Mo Chhu River, with its design philosophy rooted in the Himalayan notion of beyul—hidden valleys believed to provide spiritual sanctuary. Guests arrive via a prayer-flag-adorned bridge and receive blessings from the property's resident Buddhist monk, establishing the contemplative tone that characterizes the stay.

Interior spaces incorporate color palettes drawn from Bhutan's national flag—yellow, white, and orange—alongside black tones evoking traditional highland tents. Furnishings take inspiration from the country's distinctive Dzong fortress-monasteries, while Bhutanese motifs and prayer art appear throughout the villas. Each accommodation includes expansive outdoor decking with panoramic river views and a private heated pool, a first for the Himalayan nation.

The property offers cultural immersion through prayer-flag ceremonies, meditation sessions with the resident monk, traditional folk music performances, and sacred Cham dance. Guests can don traditional Gho and Kira garments or practice Bhutan's national sports—archery and khuru—under butler guidance. A copy of The Bhutanese Guide to Heritage is placed in each villa.

Pemako reports that 99 percent of its staff are local residents, and the hotel sources agricultural and farm products from nearby communities. Nightly rates begin at 1,800 dollars for a luxury tented villa.
