National Airlines 777F Sets Commercial Cargo Record on 20-Hour Australia Run
A Florida-based cargo carrier has completed what's believed to be the longest commercial Boeing 777 Freighter flight, covering nearly 10,000 nautical miles from Scotland to Melbourne in under a day.
National Airlines has achieved what aviation industry observers are calling the longest commercial cargo flight ever operated by a Boeing 777 Freighter, touching down in Melbourne on August 5 after a nearly 20-hour nonstop journey from Scotland.
The marathon flight, designated NCR820, lifted off from Prestwick shortly past midnight local time on August 4 and arrived at Melbourne Airport at 4:52am the following day. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft covered approximately 9,850 nautical miles—equivalent to 11,315 statute miles or 18,240 kilometers—with an airborne duration of 19 hours and 24 minutes. The route attracted significant public interest, with flight tracking platforms reporting close to 40,000 users monitoring the aircraft's progress across continents.
According to industry analysts, the mission involved delivering a replacement engine component for a Jetstar Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that had been grounded at an Australian airport since late July. The stranded widebody, believed to carry the registration VH-VKF, reportedly required new thrust reversers for its General Electric GEnx powerplants. Prestwick's role as a hub for GE Aviation maintenance and overhaul operations made it the logical departure point for the specialized cargo.
UK-based aviation services provider Golden Aviation contracted National Airlines to operate the one-off service. "We are proud to have achieved what is believed to be the world's longest commercial B777F flight for another airline," National Airlines stated, acknowledging Golden Aviation's partnership in the record attempt.
While the flight represents a milestone for commercial freighter operations, it falls short of the absolute distance record for the 777-200 family. That distinction belongs to a 2005 demonstration flight from Hong Kong to London aboard a Boeing 777-200LR, which remained airborne for 22 hours and 42 minutes. The Melbourne airport has now featured in two noteworthy long-haul operations within a two-week span, following Qantas Project Sunrise's recent record-setting passenger flight from Melbourne to Toulouse.
