Indian online travel agency Ixigo has introduced its first packaged tour offering, launching Ixigo Bharat Darshan on Tuesday through a partnership with IRCTC, India's state-owned railway tourism operator. The new feature allows users to browse and reserve pre-arranged spiritual and family travel experiences directly through the Ixigo mobile application.

The move represents a strategic expansion for Ixigo, which has historically concentrated on selling standalone travel services including railway tickets, air travel, and accommodation. According to Dinesh Kumar Kotha, who leads Ixigo Trains and ConfirmTkt, the company had never previously ventured into bundled vacation products, making this initiative a significant departure from its core business model.

Rather than developing and managing its own tour operations, Ixigo is taking a cautious market-testing approach by creating a digital storefront for IRCTC's existing package inventory. The company plans to evaluate traveler response and gather user feedback before determining whether to expand the product category further. This low-risk strategy allows Ixigo to gauge consumer demand for packaged travel without the operational complexity of building tour infrastructure from scratch.

The initial launch focuses on pilgrimage-oriented and family vacation packages, tapping into India's substantial religious tourism market. Whether Ixigo will broaden the offering to include general leisure travel remains to be seen, as the company assesses performance of these first product lines.

Questions remain about the commercial arrangements between Ixigo and its partners, including revenue-sharing structures with both IRCTC and Uber, the latter of which was mentioned as a potential distribution channel. Regulatory aspects, including what railway approvals or licensing requirements might be needed for full implementation, have not been publicly detailed.
