Huakaʻi by Hawaiian adds free bags, boosted rewards
Alaska Airlines has upgraded the kamaʻāina loyalty program with two complimentary checked bags on inter-island routes and triple Atmos points at Foodland.
Alaska Airlines announced expanded perks for Huakaʻi by Hawaiian members starting today, adding two free checked bags on Neighbor Island flights and tripling Atmos Rewards points when members convert their Foodland Maikaʻi grocery points.
The airline said the enhanced benefits are designed for kamaʻāina—Hawaii residents—who use the program for inter-island travel and trips across the combined Alaska and Hawaiian network. Members who redeem 1,000 Foodland Maikaʻi points now receive 3,000 Atmos Rewards points, up from the previous conversion rate. The two free checked bags apply to all Neighbor Island routes and include sports equipment such as golf clubs and spearfishing gear.

Huakaʻi by Hawaiian already offered quarterly fare discounts on inter-island routes that extend to up to six guests on the same reservation, along with monthly deals to destinations across both carriers' networks and access to Hawaii events. The program targets local travelers who make frequent trips between the islands or to mainland and international destinations served by the merged carrier and its oneworld alliance partners.
Alaska Airlines illustrated the benefits with three traveler profiles: a solo explorer redeeming grocery points for flights to Tokyo or Sydney, a couple using member-exclusive discounts for Las Vegas trips, and a family of five taking advantage of the free checked-bag allowance on an Oʻahu-to-Kauaʻi visit. The carrier recently sent members an offer for 25 percent off flights between Hawaii and the continental United States, according to the announcement.
The loyalty program sits alongside Alaska's Mileage Plan, functioning as a kamaʻāina-focused tier within the broader rewards ecosystem. Points earned through Huakaʻi feed into Atmos Rewards, which can be redeemed for award travel on Alaska, Hawaiian, and oneworld partners including routes to Europe and Asia.
The new benefits took effect immediately. Members can access quarterly and monthly fare deals through the Huakaʻi portal, with discounts applying to bookings made for the traveler and up to six companions traveling together.
