DFW Airport Expands Islamic Ablution Facilities in Terminal D

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has registered plans to install Islamic ablution stations in a pair of Terminal D restrooms, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation submitted in late July. The 170-square-foot renovation project, carrying an estimated price tag of $300,000, would add one men's and one women's wudu facility to existing concourse-level washrooms.

The airport characterized the initiative as an internal proposal still under evaluation, noting that the stations are intended to accommodate travelers performing ritual purification before prayer. Wudu involves washing the hands, arms, face, head, and feet—a practice that airport officials say has previously led some passengers to use standard bathroom sinks, creating slip hazards and potential damage to countertops.

DFW is no stranger to such accommodations. Two ablution stations with accompanying shoe shelving and prayer kneelers were installed in 2019 when the airport relocated its Terminal D interfaith chapel near Gate D40. Those facilities remain in active use, according to a recent profile of the airport's chaplaincy program. The airport currently maintains interfaith chapels in every terminal.

Similar amenities have appeared at other major U.S. airports in recent years. Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport opened an accessible ritual washing room connected to a Terminal D prayer space in 2024, while Chicago O'Hare lists wudu facilities at its pre-security Terminal 2 interfaith chapel. Nearly two decades ago, Indianapolis approved floor-level washing stations in a taxi-driver facility after officials observed drivers using conventional sinks for the same purpose.

The $300,000 cost estimate—which translates to approximately $1,765 per square foot—has drawn scrutiny, though airport construction typically commands premium pricing. The figure reportedly accounts for demolition, specialized plumbing, drainage systems, waterproofing, and tiling, with work requiring after-hours scheduling and heightened security protocols for post-checkpoint construction. Pre-fabricated stainless-steel wudu fixtures retail for roughly $1,000 per unit in single-user configurations.

The project filing describes the funding as privately sourced, though specific donor details were not disclosed. Texas regulations require accessibility review for construction projects estimated at $50,000 or above. The current registration status is listed as "Project Registered," with completion targeted before year-end if the proposal advances beyond the evaluation phase.
