Chicago's O'Hare Eyes $2.25B Private Express Train to Downtown
A privately financed battery-electric rail line promises 15-minute trips between O'Hare International Airport and downtown Chicago, with service launching as early as 2030.
A coalition of private investors has been developing plans for a $2.25 billion express rail connection between Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and downtown, according to a report. The proposed "O'Hare Flyer" would use battery-powered trains capable of seating up to 450 passengers, with departures scheduled every 15 minutes and a travel time of just 15 minutes between endpoints.
The project would largely utilize existing freight rail infrastructure to minimize construction costs and environmental impact. Trains would depart from Chicago's historic main post office building, which would be converted into a dedicated terminal station, then travel westward along mostly grade-separated freight tracks and rights-of-way. Near Oak Park and Maywood, the route would turn northward, continuing on existing rail corridors.

New construction would be limited to approximately the final mile and a half approaching the airport campus. Plans call for concrete support piers to elevate the tracks as they enter the main terminal loop, providing direct access to Terminals 1 and 3, as well as the new global Terminal 2. The express line would run parallel to the airport's existing people mover system but operate on separate rails.
The entirely private financing structure distinguishes the O'Hare proposal from many stalled public transit projects. The Chicago Tribune reportedly endorsed the concept in part as a competitive response to New York's ongoing struggles to establish reliable airport rail connections. If construction proceeds on schedule, the service could begin operations by 2030, potentially reshaping ground transportation patterns for one of America's busiest aviation hubs.
O'Hare International Airport handled over 73 million passengers in 2023, making dedicated high-speed rail access a long-discussed priority for the Chicago region. The battery-electric technology would allow the trains to operate without overhead catenary systems, simplifying infrastructure requirements along the route.
