Allegiant Cuts Minneapolis Flights as Delta Lures Away Pilots
The ultra-low-cost carrier is reducing off-peak service from the Twin Cities after experiencing elevated pilot departures to the region's dominant carrier.
Allegiant Air is scaling back operations at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport following a wave of pilot departures to Delta Air Lines, the carrier's CEO disclosed during an investor call this week.
Greg Anderson, Allegiant's chief executive, acknowledged that the airline has seen heightened pilot attrition concentrated among junior crew members based in the Twin Cities. The defections are primarily attributable to expanded recruitment efforts by Delta, which operates a major Midwest hub at the same airport where Allegiant maintains a base.
"Sun Country has experienced elevated pilot attrition, concentrated among its junior MSP pilots and largely driven by increased hiring at the largest carrier in the Twin Cities," Anderson stated during Tuesday's analyst briefing, referencing Delta's presence in the market.
In response to the staffing pressures, Allegiant will trim off-peak flying from Minneapolis-St. Paul, though Anderson characterized the adjustments as temporary. The reduction represents the latest operational challenge for the ultra-low-cost carrier, which recently completed its merger with Sun Country Airlines.
The pilot migration highlights ongoing competitive dynamics in the aviation labor market, where major carriers like Delta can offer more lucrative compensation packages and career advancement opportunities compared to budget airlines. Minneapolis-St. Paul's status as a Delta fortress hub gives the legacy carrier significant recruiting advantages over smaller competitors operating from the same airport.
Anderson indicated the airline views the current attrition spike as a short-term phenomenon, though he did not provide specific timelines for when normal staffing levels might resume or when full-strength flying schedules would return to the Minneapolis market.
