Airbus A220 to receive Airspace cabin upgrade in 2026
The single-aisle jet will adopt the manufacturer's premium interior design concept this year, bringing enhanced passenger comfort and operational efficiency to the narrowbody fleet.
Airbus confirmed plans last year to equip its A220 single-aisle aircraft with the Airspace cabin interior, an upgrade that will align the narrowbody with the manufacturer's widebody families including the A350, A330neo, and A320neo. The redesigned interior is scheduled for introduction in 2026, with retrofit options becoming available for existing A220 operators in subsequent years.
The Airspace package centers on passenger experience enhancements while delivering operational benefits for carriers. The system features customizable ambient lighting with 16 million LED color options, allowing airlines to establish brand identity while creating comfortable cabin environments. According to Airbus, the lighting technology can reduce passenger jet lag by as much as four hours.
Storage improvements represent a significant component of the upgrade. New overhead bins weigh 20 percent less than current compartments while providing 15 percent additional baggage capacity. The simplified bin mechanisms, which incorporate fewer components, are expected to accelerate aircraft turnaround times at airport gates through faster loading and closing operations.
The cabin design capitalizes on the A220's existing window dimensions, which at 11 by 16 inches already exceed those of competing aircraft in the category. Airspace introduces tapered surrounds for each window opening, positioned at eye level to maximize natural light penetration and passenger viewing comfort. The A220-300 variant will expand to accommodate 160 passengers starting in 2027, adding 10 seats to the current maximum configuration.
Originally developed as the Bombardier C Series before Airbus acquired majority control in July 2018, the A220 family entered commercial service in 2016. Swiss Global Air Lines launched the smaller A220-100 variant that July, while airBaltic introduced the larger A220-300 model in December of the same year. The Airspace upgrade represents the first major cabin evolution since Airbus assumed program leadership.
