Is it safe to walk in Stockholm at night?
Stockholm is one of the safer major European capitals for nighttime walking, and central neighborhoods like Gamla Stan, Östermalm, and Södermalm are generally fine well past midnight, especially on weekends when foot traffic stays high. The metro stations at Sergels Torg and around T-Centralen can feel rough late on Friday and Saturday nights, with occasional confrontations near the entrances, so move through with purpose rather than lingering. Rinkeby and Tensta in the outer northwest are areas locals avoid after dark, and there's no tourist reason to be there at night. Pickpocketing is the realistic risk in crowded areas like Drottninggatan and around major transit hubs, not street violence. As a solo woman, Gamla Stan and Södermalm feel noticeably more comfortable than equivalent neighborhoods in London or Paris at the same hour. Keep your phone in a pocket rather than your hand, and Stockholm's nighttime streets will give you very little to worry about.
