What's the smartest way to use public transit in Stockholm?
Buy an SL Access card at any Pressbyrån kiosk or metro station for 20 SEK, then load it with a 24-hour (165 SEK), 72-hour (330 SEK), or 7-day (430 SEK) pass depending on your stay. Single tickets bought via the SL app are slightly cheaper than tapping a credit card directly on the reader, but a timed pass pays off after three or four rides in a day. The metro (Tunnelbana) covers most tourist priorities efficiently, but the archipelago ferries run by Waxholmsbolaget use a separate ticketing system entirely, so budget for those separately. Commuter trains (Pendeltåg) use the same SL card and are the fastest way to reach Arlanda Airport if you're not taking the Arlanda Express. Taxis in Stockholm are legitimate but expensive; there's almost no situation where one beats the transit network on value. Download the SL Journey Planner app before you arrive.
