What's the best neighborhood to stay in Stockholm?
Stay in Södermalm if you want character alongside convenience. The island sits one stop south of Gamla Stan on the tunnelbana, has the city's best concentration of independent restaurants and bars along Götgatan and around Nytorget, and hotel prices run meaningfully lower than in the tourist core. Gamla Stan itself is worth avoiding as a base: the accommodation is overpriced, the streets are loud until midnight with tour groups, and you're essentially living inside a postcard rather than a city. Östermalm suits business travelers or anyone who wants quieter streets, proximity to the Historiska museet, and upscale dining on Strandvägen, though it costs more. Vasastan, north of the center, is increasingly well-regarded among Stockholmers for its neighborhood cafés and Odenplan restaurant scene, and it connects cleanly to Arlanda via the Arlanda Express from Centralstation, about a ten-minute walk away. For most first-time visitors, Södermalm is the call.
